He was born September 15, 1947 in Smyth County, VA to the late James Wilson Martin and Inis Testerman Martin. He was a self-employed carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Howard Martin, Ray William Martin, and Roger Lee Martin. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Carolyn Benfield Martin; daughters, Mary Jane Rhodes of Charlotte, Peggy Medlin of Maiden, and Renay Hamby of Hickory; son, James Lee Martin and wife Jeanna of Claremont; sisters, Carolyn Martin of Marion, VA, Farris Scyphers of Marion, VA, Shirley Ann Martin of Alexandria, VA, and Sandy Privett of Chilhowie, VA; brothers, Jeff Elder of Chilhowie, VA, Dean Murdock of Chilhowie, VA, and Lonnie Wylie of Sterling, VA; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Service of remembrance will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover with Rev. Ronnie Davis officiating. Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Grosses Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
